Vijay Naidu served as Professor and Director of Development Studies and the Head of the School of Government, Development and International Affairs (SGDIA) in the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) at the University of the South Pacific (USP) from 2007 to 2014. He was Professor and Director of Development Studies at Victoria University of Wellington (2003-2006). He has served USP in various capacities including Head of School of Social and Economic Development and Head of School of Government, Development and International Affairs, Dean of Foundation Studies, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Acting Vice Chancellor.
He has researched and written on political development and electoral politics in Fiji and on poverty, social development and human security in the South Pacific. He is the Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Pacific Studies and is on the editorial board of a number of journals.
He has been a consultant to government, non-government organisations and to UN agencies. He is a founding member of the Citizens Constitutional Forum in Fiji. The CCF has consistently advocated for constitutionality and the rule of law, respect for human rights and democracy. It has been de-registered by a post-coup regime for this advocacy and is regarded with degrees of hostility by military governments following each coup, and indeed by post-coup governments generally.
Professor Naidu is also an accomplished author having published 12 books and monographs, 20 reports and more than 70 papers published as book chapters, journal articles and conference proceedings as well as more than 150 conference papers.
